Are you adding the ones already in your address book because it automatically pulls them from it on its own?

Assuming that you only have one set of contacts on your iPhone with birthdays and that you didn't enter them again manually in Occasions, did you try deleting the app and reinstalling it. There is nothing to lose since it picks up the events in your Address book.

Also just for kicks verify that you don't have both MobileMe contacts AND contacts "on my iPhone". Having duplicate contacts will cause you to have duplicate Occasions.

1) launch Contacts
2) at the top of the screen, hit the back button (groups) or whatever it says.
3) you will now see All Contacts and if you have both MobileMe and on your iPhone contacts you'll see the two groups.

Since you're using MobileMe, I would assume you'd want to delete the ones in the "on my iPhone" category. besides deleting them one by one, you could try deleting your MobileMe account from the phone and then adding it back in. If I remember correctly it should ask you what to do with the contacts already on the iPhone? Otherwise if you don't have that many, it may be just easier to delete the ones in that category.

found this on the Occasions website

Duplicates?

Occasions retrieves all the contacts from the device's Address Book, so if you're seeing duplicate entries in Occasions, there are also duplicate entries in your iPhone/iPod. Generally this is caused by being synced with both MobileMe and another source of contacts via iTunes, even though you may want only one set. If you have duplicate entries and want only the MobileMe contacts to be on your device, please follow these steps:
Backup your Address Book (optional but highly recommended). On a Mac you can do this by going to Address Book -> File -> Export -> Address Book Archive. This will create a file that you can later import via File -> Import in case you would like to restore all your contacts. This isn't necessary, but you may do it for peace of mind. If you aren't using the Mac Address Book, please follow the backup instructions of the address book application that you are using.
On your iPhone/iPod go to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Select the "MobileMe" account.
Set the Contacts switch to "Off".
Choose "Delete from My iPhone" when prompted. This will take a minute as it communicates with the MobileMe server and removes the contacts from your iPhone/iPod.
Set the Contacts switch to "On".
If prompted, select "Merge".
In a few minutes, the MobileMe syncing should finish, and the only contacts on your iPhone/iPod will be the MobileMe contacts.
