Is there a way to reinstall the data from one apple application from an ipod backup? I had to delete my ipod and start over. My calendars, address books are synched to mobile me, so those were easy to reinstate, and downloaded applications are still present under the application tabs in itunes.... But I lost all the information I had recorded in the Notes application. Is there a way to get (only) this info back from my ipod backup that shows up under---- itunes preferences/devices
thanks |

I just had to do this yesterday with the Genius at the Apple Store. First he did a backup to my PB. then he reset my iPod Touch. When I got home I did a restore from the backup. that brought all my apps back. What I had written in Notes was there. But this is a Touch. I got the info back in Notes. However, if you are referring to a previous kind of iPod, I believe Notes is a different function. On those, Notes are kept in a separate folder which you access manually if you have that IPod set to disk mode. How did you get the data into Notes in the first place? Which model iPod do you have?

I got the notes in by entering them onto my ipod touch (8g newest model). My ipod was doing some odd thing with calendars that stumped everyone at the apple store. They suggested I reset the ipod to factory settings, then resync to my computer. When I got home I synced the ipod to my computer then reset the ipod by going to settings/general/reset/reset all settings. After doing this I got worried that I was going to mess it up ..so I called apple care. they had me reconnect the ipod to the computer (which then automatically synced it) and then i did restore from backup from itunes. This did not fix the problem .. so he had me restore the ipod without using a backup. This brought the ipod back to factory settings and corrected the problem.. but I had to re-add my things. Adding music, photos, and purchased applications worked perfectly. Adding back calendars and contacts were easy because they were correct on mobile me and i just re- added mobile me and it synced right back. Resetting all preferences was also easy. The only thing now missing is 3 pages of notes with information that I would like to get back. I think this info is on the backup in my itunes backup folder.. but how do I restore just that and not change anything else?
I dont want to restore from backup because that will bring back the original problem. I dont sync the notes on my imac with the ipod.. i want the ipod notes to be separate from those on my imac. (does that help?) |

You could try The Missing Sync for iPhone which I believe can grab this kind of data out of backups. Also note that if you have iPhone/iPod touch OS 3.0 you can now sync notes with Notes in Mail to your iPhone/iPod touch.

I should have mentioned that I have version 3.0. Maybe that's why my notes synced.

Notes are synced within Apple Mail under 3.0, so if you are running software that is up to date, you should be able to locate it there. Earlier versions only let you keep the Notes Info in your Backup file. This didn't leave you with an easy way to find or locate specific files.
I've always suggested to customers to treat the Note function like it's a grocery list. If you lose it and forget something, no big deal You can always email that note to yourself or take a screenshot if it's THAT important. But if it WAS that important, why haven't you entered into to something else already? Dave McGuire "What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?" |

I just spent considerable time with a client working through iTouch update and restore. We repeatedly got unknown error (-50) when synchronizing. Eventually we found the following when synchronizing pictures:
--- Synchronizing iPhoto Albums lets iPhoto clean up data for iTunes transfer to the iTouch. --- Synchronizing selected folders allows junk files to prevent iTunes from transferring pictures to the iTouch. The moral of the story is to drop all photo sets on iPhoto (copy or no-copy) and then make Albums as desired to organize photo display on the iTouch. == |
