From time to time when my 1st gen ipod touch when it is turned off (but still connected to a speaker) it makes a small "pop" sound. I have been hearing things about ipods catching on fire etc. Should I be concerned that this ipod is making these popping sounds from time to time (every couple of hours) at random? It is out of warranty-I wouldn't even know where to take it?

Take it to a Apple Store. I was talking to a Genius once and the customer next to me had a dead out of warranty iPod. They exchanged on the spot with a refurb of the same model for $65 if I recall. I'm guessing price varies per product.

You will probably told that the pop is normal. The iPod powers down the output circuitry along with the display to conserve battery power. This usually produces at least a minor pop or click. The same thing happens upon awakening some iPods.

Intermittent issues are annoying and never want to reproduce themselves at the Genius Bar. An "Out of Warranty Battery replacement" is what Bibo/Jim is describing. This would get you a replacement Touch that has a 90 day warranty and a brand new battery. Pretty darn good deal as long as there is no damage to the iPod. Accidental damage replacements are more money but cheaper than a new unit.

As long as nothing else is going on with your Touch... I would suggest you not worry about it.

Thank you all for your replies. There are no other issues with it, it works great other than the popping sounds from time to time. The battery replacement is an incredible deal! Thanks for letting me know about that Dave!

As long as other people have experienced those minor pop or click sounds, I feel better. Even though I have taken good care of it and it has never been dropped, I wouldn't want it to spontaneously combust Smile
