I must admit that Apple's New Front Row application that ships with the NEW iMac G5 (with built-in iSight) is very compelling if you use your Mac as a media center. As usual I have the previous model iMac G5 as a dedicated iTunes jukebox and just couldn't justify getting a new iMac because of Front Row. However, on this particular iMac Front Row would be PERFECT! Luckily there was a way for me to get it and use it without buying a whole new computer.

The instructions on how to download Front Row from Apple and install it on your existing Mac can be found here.

This is great, however the real magic of Front Row is being able to use a remote control to access it from the sofa. The New iMac comes with a wireless remote. Your old Mac doesn't have one. Keyspan to the rescue! I already owned the Keyspan Express Remote which I had connected directly to my Apple AirPort Express. I disconnected it from the AirPort Express and connected it directly to the iMac. I found this set of instructions and AppleScript to setup the Keyspan remote to launch Front Row at the touch of a button just like Apple's iMac remote does.

I don't usually go for these kinds of hacks. However, $1,200 is $1,200.
It works like a charm!

You can never go wrong by doing the right thing.

There are three kinds of people, those who are good at math and those who aren't.

There are two kinds of computer users: those who have lost data and those who are about to — backup your Mac!

Thanks for this tip! I have an upgraded Cube as my media server, and it installed just fine. I also have an ATI Remote Wonder (came with one of my PC video cards many moons ago) that was easy to program based on the instructions at the web site you listed. Now I can start up my music without having to be right on top of the Cube.
