You can change your desktop picture by going to the System Prefs and clicking on Desktop & Screen Saver.
However, there's a faster way to get here. Simply hold down the Control Key and click anywhere on your desktop in the Finder. When the contextual menu pops up choose "Change Desktop Background." You'll be taken right into the Desktop system pref. ---- You can never go wrong by doing the right thing. 4 out of 3 people have trouble with fractions. Within IPhoto you can select a photo and go to the share menu and click desktop and your photo will be your desktop.

Actually, you don't have to go to the Share menu. There is a Desktop button in the bar under the photos.
