I just picked up a Bluetooth adapter for my Mac to use with my Bluetooth headset I picked up for my cell phone. When I try to pair it up with my Mac I get an error saying "Failed to set up the headset. Headsets are not supported on your Bluetooth hardware."
Now I'm confused, I thought this was supposed to work. The adapter I picked up is from Kensington and works with OSX. Are there different types of Bluetooth adapters? |

Yes. Not all Bluetooth devices support all "profiles", or different types of services. It also depends on the drivers.
On the Kensington site, I found a page listing the supported services. Headsets (I think they're called "voice gateway") aren't listed. Apple actively supports the D-Link USB Bluetooth adapter with drivers and firmware. I've used it with headsets. You should consider using the D-Link instead. === Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “Nothing is impossible. Not if you can imagine it. That’s what being a scientist is all about.” Cubert J. Oh well that was a wasted $20, not worth paying shipping to send it back.
One would assume Bluetooth is a Standard. Guess I should have done some research 1st. |

It is a standard - with multiple modules you can implement or not.

Well I'm still confused, I just got the D-Link DBT-120 Bluetooth adapter and I'm still getting the same error message.
I downloaded the Bluetooth Firmware Updater 1.2.1, but it is old and said I did not need it. |

I know I have used a Bluetooth headset with the D-Link DBT-120 on my G5 tower.
If you look in the Bluetooth section of your System Profiler, what does it say about the adaptor? Is the adaptor plugged directly into the system or into a hub? if a hub, is it powered? What headset are you using? Is it maybe Bluetooth 2.0 only or something odd like that? === Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “Nothing is impossible. Not if you can imagine it. I tried connecting the Bluetooth adapter to the internal port on my USB 2.0 card and get the same results. The headset I'm using is 1.1/1.2 compatible. It is the Cardo Scala 500.

My Apple Bluetooth Software version is 1.7.9f12, but I'm running an Intel Mac on 10.4.8. What Mac and OS are you running?

Hmmm. Very odd.
Have you tried it on one of the Mac's internal ports? I know they're USB 1, but that should still work. === Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “Nothing is impossible. Not if you can imagine it. Just tried the internal port, same error. I also tried it on my Wife's 733/G4, same error.

I noticed you tried the 1.2 firmware update, but have you tired the latest (1.5) Bluetooth update? It does talk about headsets in the listing for the update.
I would think you wouldn't need this as it looks like it's for 10.3, though. === Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “Nothing is impossible. Not if you can imagine it. That’s what being a scientist is all about.” Cubert J. Farnsworth: “No, that’s what being a magical elf is all about.” |

Yes, I downloaded the 1.5 update yesterday and it said it was not needed as I was up to date.

Have you tried pairing as an "any" device instead of a headset?

Yep, no luck their either. I've sent D-Link and e-mail, waiting for a reply.

I took the Bluetooth adapter to work today and tried it on my G5 there, exact same error.
D-Link responded to me, obviously they did not really read my question that well as they gave me instructions of what to do in the set-up wizard in windows Also they did not read the question well as they think I'm just having trouble getting it to see my headset. |

I also have a d-link USB Bluetooth adapter and I have never been able to get it to pair with my Motorola Bluetooth headset (which pairs fine with my 12"aluminum Powerbook G4 that has built-in Bluetooth). I CAN get it to pair from the eMac with my Bluetooth barcode reader which I use for Delicious Library though, so I know it works. This is the adapter that is supposed to work with the Mac. I can't find it right now, so I can't tell you the part number, but I think it was version B. I am on an eMac G4 1.25MHz, 1 GB RAM.The reason I use this adapter with the eMac is that the eMac has no built-in Bluetooth.

Well D-Link was useless, part of it was the language barrier since D-Link supports calls go to India. All I wanted to know was if ANY Bluetooth headset would work with this adapter. After talking to 3 people and being put on hold 6 times they told me this adapter did not have any headsets listed as being compatible with it.
Since you said you knew you had used it with headsets I did more searching on Apple's support board and came across this thread. I just finished a Skype call to my parents in FL! A few times they said I sounded like I was talking underwater, but this was expected since I am just under the minimum system requirements for Skype. But we talked for about 15 minutes and I did not have to repeat anything. I am happy now! This message has been edited. Last edited by: Bibo (Jim Nichols), |

How very weird. I know when I got my D-Link adaptor, I needed to update the firmware, but that was a few years ago. But I certainly didn't have to jump through all those hoops to load the firmware - just download and run the installer (although I think I had to do it twice).
Glad to see it's finally working, though. === Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “Nothing is impossible. Not if you can imagine it. That’s what being a scientist is all about.” Cubert J. Farnsworth: “No, that’s what being a magical elf is all about.” |

Wow, that link to the forum about how to get that firmware update to apply is worth its weight in gold. I think I will be able to use my headset with the eMac now. Thanks. I sure am glad I read all messages in this bullitin board. One never knows when something will come up that you need. I, too, had gotten the message that the firmware update was not needed. Obviously, it is.
