There are techniques in Photoshop to descreen an image (not easy to do well) but they are not as good as using the descreening capabilities of your scanner in the original capture of the scan. That is always the best starting point.

I'm not too happy with my Canoscan LiDE 70's descreening capability. It's just OK - not great - it leaves too many artifacts behind.

Has anyone had any luck with this software? Here's an example of what it can do:

This is the best descreening app I've seen, especially for the money. Would seem too difficult manipulating in Photoshop to get comparable results. We'd consider buying it if it wasn't an overseas transaction.

It looks like photoshop is just as capable. I just did this in Photoshop. Their sample image isn't really the best though.

What PhotoShop processing steps did you use, Bibo?

A combination of "Dust & Scratches", "gaussian blur" & "smart sharpen".

Most of the commercial filter programs are just a series of Photoshop filters saved as actions/scripts. The tools are already in Photoshop.

Thanks, Bibo.

I agree that many commercial "filters" are just actions in PhotoShop. Any skilled user could do the same on his own, much cheaper, and perhaps better.

But Sattva's software seems to be an FFT algorithm, custom programmed outside PhotoShop. I'll try contacting them to see if I can determine more about their software.

I thought Sattva was a British outfit, but it appears to be from Russia.
