Hello,

I've just spent a little over 2 hours getting tech support from Epson for my All-in-One RX620 which stopped printing a few days ago. My printer is printing again but, coincidentally or not, Photoshop CS3 will no longer launch. It crashes when it gets to "Building TWAIN Menu Items" in the startup process. (I did send the Crash Report to Adobe).

TWAIN and scanning and copying was something that the Epson tech support person in Manila had me working with earlier. That's why I think there might be a connection although she says not. It just seems too coincidental since I've never had a problem launching Photoshop.

Do you have any idea what might be wrong? Am I going to have to Uninstall and Reinstall PS CS3?
If yes, is there something special I need to do about authorization? I have never had to reinstall it since I first installed it when it first came out.

Thanks in advance for your kind suggestions.

Sincerely,
Carol

Carol,
• Did the tech have you download any drivers to your computer?
If so drag them to the desktop and restart Photoshop to see if it still crashes.
• Did you move the Twain Plug-in (Photoshop Import/Export Folder)
to the desktop and try to restart Photoshop?
• Did you rebuild preferences? (Hold Shift-Option-Command and launch Photoshop)

Try these options...sounds like the TWAIN plug-in got corrupted.
I had problems with Epson drivers and Photoshop in past years, but not now.
When I would scan, I would get these weird files on my system labeled @Å%$e, and the like.

Hi Chita!

SUCCESS!
Photoshop started up flawlessly after I followed your instructions and dragged the Twain Plug-In to the desktop from the Import/Export Folder within the Plug-Ins Folder within the Photoshop CS3 Folder in the Applications Folder!

QUESTION: There is no longer a Twain Plug-In where the one I dragged to the desktop used to be. What need I do now?

ANOTHER QUESTION:
I do have a Folder of all the Epson disk images that I downloaded last night and today on my desktop. Should I trash them all?

Thank you so much for your help!

Big Grin

Carol,
I emailed you a copy of my Twain driver.
If you try my file and there's still a problem, it's probably the Epson drivers. From those disk images, did you install any Epson drivers to your system?

Hi Chita,

Thanks so very much for your followup message after the message containing your TWAIN plug-in.

I downloaded your TWAIN plug-in and dragged it to the location where the one I removed had been. Photoshop, upon launch, behaved the same way it did when my own TWAIN plug-in was in the Plug-Ins folder. In other words, Photoshop crashed just like before.

The Epson Tech Rep had me install, then uninstall, then reinstall RX620 drivers.
The main one I remember installing was

Printer Driver v2.1aA
PowerPC Macs with OS X (v10.2.0 - 10.3.7)
epson11330.dmg - 10.8MB - posted on 02/08/05

This file contains the Epson Stylus Photo RX620 Printer Driver v2.1aA.
Installation instructions:
Double-clicking this file creates a disk image on your desktop.
Open the disk image.
Double-click the installer icon to begin the installation.
Please view the included "OS X booklet.pdf" document for additional information.
Download Now
===============================================

and then we did something with this file I think when we tested scanning on the printer.. I just kept doing what she said and after 2 hours I kind of lost track

TWAIN Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v2.65A
PowerPC Macs with OS X (v10.2.x - 10.3.x)
epson11389.dmg - 22.5MB - posted on 04/18/05

This file contains the EPSON Scan Utility and TWAIN Driver v2.65A.
Installation instructions:
Double-clicking this file creates a disk image on your desktop.
Open the disk image.
Double-click the installer icon to begin the installation.

Download Now
============================================
I remember when it was time to test scanning, I told her I'd like to test it with Photoshop but she said that could wait and she had me just press SCAN on the printer itself.

By the way, the Epson RX620 Drivers are here:
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.js...s&platform=Macintosh

Thank you very much, Chita, for your continuing help! : )

Best Wishes,
Carol

What OS are you running?
1. Did you and she ever test the driver with Photoshop?
2. Did it work?
3. If the two of you did not test with Photoshop, I'd recommend that you
uninstall the Epson Driver and actually do what she had you do - several more times.
Uninstall and reinstall.
My experience with Epson drivers is that I've had to uninstall/reinstall several times
to get everything (Photoshop and the Epson drivers) to work together.

The first thing I did was run the uninstaller. It's the installer, just click the uninstall button.
Then, after the uninstall, I did a search and deleted everything Epson from my system.
Sounds drastic but it worked for me. I left the Twain driver where it was in the plugins folder.
I think it took after the second uninstall/install.

Chita,

Your suggestions remind me of something that
she wanted me to do but I resisted. As background
I have 3 Epson printers that I use with the iMac G5:
1. RX620 USB
2. 2000P USB
3. 4800 FW

She wanted me to remove everything Epson but warned me that it would remove all the drivers etc for all 3 of my Epson printers. I said "NO!"

Are you saying I really have to do that?

Thanks again, Chita. It's really good to find someone who has been through the same problem and solution.

Weary,
Carol : )

I would have to agree with her.
I would first try the uninstaller with the RX620.
You can download them all again and reinstall them.
But the Epson drivers install so much on your system that
you may not know what is the problem amongst their components.

After I wiped them clean, I had no more problems.

I understand what you're saying, Chita.
And why she wanted me to find the Epson Folder and trash it.

Thanks again.

Best,
Carol

Hi Chita,

Before I remove all the Epson files, is there
a way to save all my Custom Print Settings, esp.
for the 4800?

Thank you!

Carol

Carol,
You can save any custom Printer settings as a "Preset"
To reselect at any time.
See the Print dialogue box.
Where these are saved to, I don't know, I've never
decided to look for them (until now) Smile

Found it.
Your custom printer settings for your Epson printers are saved here:
Library/Printers/EPSON/Preferences/pageSettings.xml and printSettings.xml

I noted that these two file updated every time I created a new Preset for my Epson printer.
So, it might be helpful copy this folder to your desktop before you start your uninstall process. And use these two files in place of any new ones of the same name, if they are created.

Chita,

When you said "Aw Shucks" did you look down and kick the dirt with your foot? Smile
