The new year is getting off to a great start with our first meeting for
2008. The Detroit InDesign User Group will be holding a special event
Thursday, February 7, as well as our regular meeting.

After a sold-out World Premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival, and
events in over 150 cities worldwide, the global screening tour for
"Helvetica" keeps going, and now it is coming to us! Helvetica is a
feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design, and global
visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which
celebrated its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about
the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces
and the type that inhabits them. Included are discussions with renowned
designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and
aesthetics behind their use of type. Go to www.helveticafilm.com for more

There will be two showings: 2 pm and 6:30 pm. Ticket price is $5. Open
seating. Ticket presales through the main campus bookstore, 734-462-4409, or
at the door the day of the event. Doors open at 1:30 for the 2 pm show and 6
for the 6:30 show.

Following the evening show, Chita Hunter will discuss font issues and font
management, and will show how designers can get the most out of the features
of Open Type. This is one of the top requested topics from our surveys, so
make sure you don't miss this meeting! We will conclude the evening with our
usual raffle.

NOTE: Registering online for the meeting does NOT include the movie. You
must purchase your ticket through the presale or at the door; there are a
limited number of seats available. Please also note that we will not have
food or drinks this time.
