I have a ibook that froze on gray screen with apple. I think i was running 10.3.9.
I tryed shift start.
shift cmd p-r
I then ran the hardware trouble shoot disc and it says everything is ok. then restarted and back to froze on gray apple screen.
What do I do now or is it no good anymore. I don't know much about this stuff

Sounds like the OS has "issues"...

I would try an Archive and Install first. Use Install Disk 1. Go to another Mac and while in Finder, click on Help in the Menu bar and type "reinstall". 3rd item down is "reinstalling Mac OS", click on it and follow those instructions on your iBook. (You may need to hold down the "C" key while powering up the iBook to get it to book from the Install disk)

Let us know if you need additional assistance.

No, Archive and Install takes your OS, moves it out of the way, and loads a new one. It leaves your data alone.

A Clean install wipes out the entire drive.

From your description it sounds like the hard drive died. You should try booting from your CD to see if you hard drive will mount. Try running the hardware trouble shooting disc again to see if it finds your hard drive.

Good luck on the above and I really hope you have a backup.

It"s your HD Frown

Since it doesn't see it as a Destination that means it isn't mounting. What model iBook is this?

New HD can run between $125-175 installed depending of the size. Email me if you need more help.

I would say Brian has the best solution. You should try booting from another drive and see if you can see anything on your old drive. Or perhaps putting it into target mode and see if you can connect it to another Mac.

I have to politely disagree Paul.

She booted from the Install disc and said that it can't find a Destination for installing an OS. This means the HD is NOT mounting at all. Since it is an iBook, this means it is between 3.5-8 years old (depending on the model).

Most folks want their unit back up and running first and then get concerned about data recovery. Smart folks already have their data backed up Wink

OK... I didn't see that post, so you're probably correct. That being said, it never hurts to double check.
