My Maxtor OnrTouch4, 500GB, USB 2.0, drive's icon no longer opens a window to reveal the drive's content when double clicked. Instead all the desktop icons and windows momentarily (about 1-2 secs)disappear and return. It also happens when I do a command-I on the drive. This started occurring when the data stored on the drive reached 350GB. Maxtor Manager's diagnostic test said the drive is find; as did Apple's Disk Utility test. I can access the drive's content using Canon ImageBrowser and Iphoto programs. My system is a MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz Intel core 2 Duo, 2GB Memory, Mac OSX 10.4.11; also my other drive's icons respond as expected when double clicked(they are Lacie firewire drives). Also noticed the drive initially responds to the icon being double clicked(active light starts blinking and it starts spinning up) then the above happens.

What test did you do with Disk Utility?

Did you repair the disk or repair permissions? Two very different things. You should probably do both.

Is this drive set up as FAT32 (Windows/DOS) or HFS+(MAc)?

Hi Jack,

Repair permissions is grayed out when this disk is selected in disk utility. I did repair and verify permissions on the Mac HD; however this hasn't resolved the problem. The disk is HFS+ formatted.

Can you access the disk via the Finder? Does it show up in the left-side pane?

Do you have Disk Warrior? If so, this disk sounds like a candidate.

Have you restarted the computer?

Hi Jack,

I can't access the disk via the finder; it does appear in the left-side pane; I do have disk warrior(may have to update); restarted Mac, issue still persists.

I am no Jack Beckman but if the drive is clicking, It is having problems positioning the heads to home. If it can't do that it will not mount. If you can't mount it properly you will not be about to run any tool against it to fix it logically. Unless there is something on the drive that is really "worth it" for you, you may as well give up the ghost when you get tired. Otherwise, ship it to a drive recovery service that can recover your data for a fee.

Not what you wanted to hear but that is what it is.

Calvin,

I didn't see where it was stated the drive was clicking...did I miss it?

Leicon is able to see the contents via Canon Imagebrowser and iPhoto, so the drive itself is responding somewhat.

Leicon, have you opened the Console (in Utilities) and looked for any error messages? Try opening the Console, setting it for All messages, and then try double-clicking the drive and see if you get an error.

Gee Jack I don't know where I got the clicking thing. Could it be from the first word of the title to this thread? Hmmmm? Big Grin

"Clicking drive ... icon" not "clicking drive" Calvin, unless I misread that (entirely possible).

Seriously Jack. Since the title read as above I assume that there was a problem with the drive mechanically.

I yield to the Genius in you.

Back to the problem at hand - sounds like it's time to try Disk Warrior (make sure yours is current!).

Okay, thanks to Cutler, now I get it.

Clicking ON the Maxtor Icon. Not the drive clicking.

This is why Beckman is the Genius and I... well I... am just a Jedi Master.

Again, I think you need to try the current version of Disk Warrior.
