My son is out of the country on a business trip and his laptop just did this.Any suggestions?
Model ID and Vintage would really be helpful.
There were a number of models that had bad video cards and in some cases Apple offered extended warranties.
Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, 13”. I think it is the same model I have, which is 9.2. He has it maxed out 2TB SSD, etc., last year.

If it has the discreet Radeon GPU (which it looks like), you may be out of luck. My otherwise terrific 2011 MBPro 15" became a useless brick because of it. It was not in the range of "some cases" that qualified for the extended warranty.
The display can be replaced by Apple for a flat rate cost of $475+ tax as long as it is a 2012 or newer model. It will be joining Apple's Vintage list in the near future. Get a backup done first.
