Are you "seeing" the windows or the drive and folders? Are you actually viewing the screen. If so, then you can choose under the apple menu. If you are "seeing" the contents of the computer drive instead, then you won't be seeing the apple menu. i.e. are you "seeing" it in your Network under Servers?

Update to Donna's comment about keyboard shutdown:

This usually requires that the keyboard be connected directly and not through a USB hub.

An update: 10.4.11 doesn't offer the "screen sharing" option. I looked in both "Sharing" & "Network" sys prefs.

I located the option in 10.5.4 on my MBPro, but trying the Screen Sharing option in the connection doesn't work. I turned on "Apple Events" in the older computer. Still doesn't work.

The older one opens OK to transfer files, but still haven't been able to do a remote shut down. Maybe not possible in the PPC OS.

On the Tiger machine:

System Preferences > Sharing
- Check Apple Remote Desktop
- Check Show status in menu bar (polite, but not required)

- Click Access Privileges
-- Select a User
-- Check appropriate uses, for example, Shutdown and Restart
-- Click OK
- Read the Computer Name: and the note below, remember the <name>.local string.
Close Preferences.

=====

On the Leopard machine:
In a Finder Window
Under Shared
Select the machine and click Share Screen
or
Connect to Server... (Command-K)
- enter vnc://<name>.local as you noted above
Provide Username And Password

Share the screen.

Jim- Thanks. Still working on it.

I had all the right Tiger items checked.
QUESTION: I noticed in the Tiger setup an additional sentence at the bottom of the dialog:

"Others can manage your computer using the address xxx.xxx.x.xx" (? ftp address??)

Does "manage" imply a different level of access? I have tried logging in remotely with the latter & connected OK, but it just opens windows, folders, etc. same as the Cmd-K & computer name method.

Maybe I'm missing something. Does "screen sharing" give access to the actual OS menu on the other computer (so it can be shut down)? That's what I can't seem to get to.

Will try from the new MBPro another time & check your settings there.

Well, I have all the correct settings. The MBPro recognizes the desktop Mac. The glitch (and it happened before) is that when I press "Share Screen" it refuses the name & password. I know the entries are correct because I use them regularly for SuperDuper backups on the older Mac, installs, the usual needs.

I tried the password for the MBPro - still "authentication failed" message appears.

Tried deleting the default "Name" & re-entering, but still no luck. (The default name is correct, actually.)

Cmd-K and ethernet# method gets the connection, but still screen sharing authentication refused.

I set up a VNC viewer password on the older machine. Still doesn't work.

The only thing that DID work was selecting "Guests may request permission to control screen" on the older Mac. But that doesn't do me any good if I have the monitor connected to the laptop & want to turn on the older tower & access a shut down.

Will throw in the towel for now. I can manage without this ability. Just frustrating that it doesn't work when it should. I can transfer files & access windows OK.

NEVER GIVE UP!! HALLELUJAH!

Yet one more try, & IT WORKED!

THE SECRET: (sorry for all the caps, but this has taken more hours than I care to count.)

On the Tiger Mac, Sys Prefs/Sharing/Apple Remote Desktop/Access Privileges/CHECKED "OBSERVE-CONTROL-SHOW WHEN BEING OBSERVED"

Previously I had only checked "Restart and shut down" under the "Allow user…" list.

Once again, with feeling: In the "Allow user" list, BE SURE to check "Observe/control/show when being observed." (Not sure the "show" item is necessary, but I checked it.)

Don't know why leaving this out would cause Authentication to fail, but it did in my case.

Jim, thanks for the specific instructions. I pretty much had all the settings you listed, so you confirmed them. Now you can add this step to the procedure.

[UPDATED per Mary Jo feedback]

On the Tiger machine:

System Preferences > Sharing
- Check Apple Remote Desktop
- Check Show status in menu bar (polite, but not required)

- Click Access Privileges
-- Select a User
-- Check essentially all uses, for example, Observe, Control, Show when being observed, Shutdown and Restart
....... (Apple gives no hint, but Control is probably required if you check Shutdown and restart. I've not tested this in detail, but checking all of these works.)
-- Click OK
- Read the Computer Name: and the note below, remember the <name>.local string.
Close Preferences.

=====

On the Leopard machine:
In a Finder Window
Under Shared
Select the machine and click Share Screen
or
Connect to Server... (Command-K)
- enter vnc://<name>.local as you noted above
Provide Username And Password

Share the screen.

And it's all still working. Remote shutdown & all.
Many thanks again! (Never say "never")
