This message was posted on a special interest website that I use. Could someone please explain what info isactually picked up via an email response to an online posting? Thank you
We have noticed a new kind of "spam" Some posts have come up saying something like, "Hi, I am a new member. Can somebody e-mail me to explain this topic" or "Does somebody want to e-mail me for X reason." Sending an email to an experienced hacker can be a possible security risk to your personal computer. We remind you that e-mailing an unknown person is never a good idea. The Moderators will never ask you to email them as we all prefer to use the Private Message function. Strangers should not be asking strangers to email them. Please use the Private Message option as much as possible, and please, please use some judgement if you do choose to send an e-mail to somebody you don't know. There are many known members that have been registered a long time and that clearly are synchro people. But please be cautious of newly registered members with 1 post asking you to email them. |

They get your e-mail, respond back with an email containing malicious code in HTML, thus infecting your computer and then turning your computer into a "bot" to be used for sending out more spam or to be used in a bank of computers for a denial of service attack on a web site. Or to gain access to your personal info and take over identity.
This is more of a threat to windows users. (The virus aspect that is, the Phising aspect is open to anyone) Some info about HTML Viruses here: http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/j-018.shtml This message has been edited. Last edited by: Bibo (Jim Nichols), |
