Seems that Google does EVERYTHING better.

Check out Google Maps.

Puts mapquest to shame. Only one problem, Safari isn't supported (YET!). I tried it in Firefox and it is VERY, VERY SWWEEETTT!

Be sure to try the Zoom and Pan, this is the way Mapping and Directions should be done.

WOW, Also did a Local Search on a topic like Gas Stations, up pops all the gas stations for that selected area, with Phone Info, Address, and WEBSITE if one was available.

Did a search for Computer Stores, and CompUSA popped up and the balloon allows you to input data for driving directions all right in the same window/balloon.

This is pretty slick...

Thank you for posting this. This is the best mapping site I have seen yet. I love the "draggable" maps Smile

Here is a tour of the Google Mapping program

Cool

Another good map site is MAP24.COM.

I really like how all you have to do is grab the map to re-center it, you don't have to wait for it to reload. I could "see" all the surrounding area, so I would be familiar with the driving.

But, has anyone tried to print the maps?

The map, with directions, that I printed, showed the highlighted route but it was on top of a large white "box" that blocked out the map behind it. The map printed around this box. On the screen you could see the map under the highlighted route, no box.

Anyone else tried printing?

Just tried it, Linda, and I’m seeing the same thing. The work around (I’m sure they’ll fix it eventually) is to do a screen capture.

Interesting but different behavior in Firefox.
Print or Print preview does not do the white box like Safari. The map prints, but not the blue route line(s). Sent feedback reports on each via the link at page top. Do likewise if you're so inclined.

I find that with Microsoft's Virtual Earth you get a sharper satellite photo, and you're able to zoom in further. Safari wouldn't work at the site, but the Opera 8.02 browser did well. It's still the same five-year-old photo, though.

I tried MSN virtual earth with Safari and it worked for me but not a smoothly or quickly as Google's map. I'll have to download Opera later and see how it performs....

Gota love those Aerial shots..... Smile

Here is a way to get the feel of Google Earth ( while we all wait for the Mac version of Google Earth ) according to this web site called Flash Earth.

They use Google Maps and MSN Virtual Earth.

Does anyone else know of other web site for aerial photographs that is Safari friendly...?

Sunday a week ago my son (PC user) showed me Google earth on his computer. This must be what everyone is describing. We located our own house, which showed the addition we put on about 2001-2, so that verified the currency of the photos - satellite I assume. Also looked up my daughter's place near Colorado Springs, - a new house she built last winter, moved in this August. It didn't find her address, but we fished around for it anyway. Looked like it showed her house when it was still under construction. FUN!
P.S. Also a little scary if your address gets in the wrong hands.

Something you should know about Google Earth (beta)...
Here's what a search found about Google Earth on their site:
"Google Earth is a broadband, 3D application that not all computers can run.

Apple Macintosh computers are not supported at this time (but we are working on it).
Windows-based desktop PCs older than 4 years old may not be able to run it.
Windows-based notebook PCs older than 2 years old may not be able to run it."

Hope they get it going for Macs. It's really awesome.

A belated notice:
I see by the paper that Apple has created a giant replica of an iPod that can be seen from space -- almost like a crop circle. If you have Google Earth installed, you can see it here.
