I'm posting this link because I know of at least a couple of members who pay AOL every month even though they have broadband through another company such as Comcast. Many do it because they wanted to keep their email addresses, others because they just like AOL (for whatever reason Smile ).
Now it looks like you'll be able to keep AOL and not pay for it. Read the article link above and call the number to cancel your monthly charge. You can only cancel the charges via the phone (unfortunately and so AOL like).

Here's AOL's announcement. Sounds like connecting through their servers will still require a fee, but email, etc. will be free to folks who connect some other way.

I was finally able to cancel my AOL accounts last week (after trying to for over a month) and they offered this "new feature" saying it would be free forever. Only catch is that they want to keep a Form of Payment method on hand. This would mean either a Credit/Debit Card or E-Banking would be attached to your FREE email account. They want that info in case you would like to purchase one of their services like voice mail or call forwarding or caller ID. I personally can't see a need for this if I am on High Speed internet that doesn't tie up a phone line in the first place. But I never used those services in the past.

I was on AOL for over 10 years. I was a Community Leader (ie: Volunteer) in the Pets Area for the last 9 years. I enjoyed AOL but it truly is "The Internet on training wheels." Like Terry sometimes says... Let It Go!

I also went for the plan, I heard about it a few days ago but when Terry pointed out the USA Today article, I figured I better jump in now before AOL changes/discontinues it or adds restrictions due to high volumes of people taking advantage of it.

I mainly kept the "Bring Your Own Access" plan to help members of another User Group if they had problems (Haven't had a AOL Call for Help in over a year). I get my AOL mail via Entourage and actually don't check it that often and I haven't signed on to AOL proper in many months.

Most use I got out it was when there was a discussion thread about AOL Radio here and I tried it for a few days.

Anyway, it took about 40 minutes of hold time and coy questioning to get it done, but I guess it is worth it.

Funny thing is that I think a AOL Starter Kit was the first piece of Software I bought for my Mac (this was before they started giving away floppies for free). It was 1/2 off of $19.99 at Hudsons and had the AOL software and a Book on AOL. Later that year if I remember right they started giving away floppies for free.

My last question for the AOL rep when all was said and done was "How long have I been an AOL member"?

Dave has me beat I guess.

I have been with AOL for 10 years and 6 months.
