A friend of mine has an iphone and wants to know how to change the directions on the map app from metric units to miles. Where is the option for doing that? Thanks.

Out of curiosity which OS is he on? 2.2 or 3.x?
Have him go to Settings-General-International and make sure his region format is US and his language is English. ---- You can never go wrong by doing the right thing. 4 out of 3 people have trouble with fractions. Had my friend check the settings and they were correct, however, map still shows distances in kilometers. Any other ideas on what to do to get it to display correctly?

Maybe a silly question, but was this phone bought in the US?

Where is your friend physically located when he uses Maps? If he's close to Canada, that may be why it's showing Kilometers.

To answer Jack's question the phone was bought in the US and as to Terry's question, the phone is close to Canada. Apparently they haven't tried using the map function when further away from the Canadian border. Just a note: I have an ipod touch and my map app shows directions in miles, even though I'm the same distance from Canada as they are. They've tried resetting the iphone and unchecking and rechecking the region box.

The difference is the touch can only rely on Wi-Fi for location where as the iPhone can also use cell towers (and GPS if it's a 3G or 3GS) and for some reason the Maps app is thinking that the location is in (or at least close enough) to Canada.
Have them try it again further away from the border. ---- You can never go wrong by doing the right thing. 4 out of 3 people have trouble with fractions. That's what I asked them to do when they get a chance. I'll report back with the results when I get them.

An update on the iphone map app. My friends home is within a few hundred yards of the river, directly across from Canada, so that must be why, when she asks for directions from her home it gives distances in kilometers. When she tried it further inland she was getting distances in miles. The only problem is that when she wants directions, it's usually starting out from her home, so all she gets are readings in kilometers.
