Thinking about this option, as I feel I've done the 'just upgrade'
feature a little too often. Anyone try this with migrating data and apps afterward? Do you have to deactivate any apps prior? |

Anytime you are going to erase, it's a good idea to deactivate any apps requiring activation, since you can't be 100% sure what they consider when deciding if you system is the same as the one it "activated".
Since I only have a few Intels, I don't have as many installs as with previous releases, but all of them went fine(well, except for the server install, but I managed to salvage most of it). === Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “Nothing is impossible. My first cut at 10.6 was upgrading from 10.5.8. I did not de-activate anything. Adobe CS4 was fine.
Second time was a clean install and then use of Migration Assistant to get accounts and applications. Adobe CS4 worked fine. There were some glitches elsewhere which may or may not have been due to the upgrade. In fact, see below for hardware comments. The third time was a clean install after deactivating Adobe CS4. I migrated only the users and not applications. Mostly to leave some cruft behind. After installation and activation using CS4 and CS3 keys, CS4 worked fine. Then, bummer! SuperDuper backups failed with lots of bad files in the CS4 fonts and applications. I tried again with the same results. So, I again started from a clean disk and installed 10.6 and CS4 using an external DVD drive. I had 100% success. The "SuperDrive" in my early-2009 Mini is not "Super" at all. I don't know if it is bad enough for AppleCare replacement. But, it is bad enough that I won't use it for any DVDs. If you are upgrading a Mini or a MacBook, beware of errors reading double-layer DVDs like the Adobe CS4 Disk 1. A useful work-around is to create Disk Image files of the software distribution using a good DVD drive and then install from the images mounted on the target machine. This is especially nice for multiple machine installs as reading the mounted image is faster than using the real DVD in a drive. In addition, where multiple disks are required, you can mount all the required disks and do not have to watch and wait to play disk jockey. It just works. |
