Hi,
Lately I've lost my patience with time wasters that perhaps can be eliminated. Thank you in advance for kindly helping me with these issues: 1. When I take a screenshot using Command+Shift+4, the resultant image is always in .PNG format. Then I have to save it as a JPEG in order to paste it in AppleWorks for instance. (I did just purchase iWork 09 and am starting to learn to use it). IS THERE A WAY TO TAKE THE SCREENSHOT AS A JPEG? 2. I am using FireFox and often I wait for a page to load, then notice near the top a statement that "FireFox has prevented this page from loading". Then I have to hit an "Allow" button. How can I change FireFox's prefs to eliminate this time waster? There are more time wasters but I don't remember them at this time. Thanks in advance for your generous and expert help! Very Best Wishes, Carol |

1) Launch Terminal, key this in (or paste it to save time)
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg then hit return. 2) Turn off "Block pop-up windows" in the Content prefs of Firefox. ---- You can never go wrong by doing the right thing. 4 out of 3 people have trouble with fractions. Hi Terry,
I felt so proud of myself by following (so I thought!) your instructions. I found out how to open the Terminal and I ran your script and got the message "Process completed". Then I quit the terminal. I was surprised that my screenshots are still saving as PNGs (see pics below that I converted to JPEGs) Was I supposed to have saved something after running your script, or restarted the computer or other step that might be obvious to you but not to me? 2. When I went to uncheck Block Pop-Ups in FireFox prefs, I was surprised to see that it was already unchecked. Thanks in advance for more instructions, please. Sincerely, Carol (feeling like the biggest doofus in Macdom) ![]() |

Hi again Terry,
Am attaching image of already unchecked pop-up blocker in FireFox prefs. Could not figure out how to add a second image to my previous message. Thanks for your patience! Carol ![]() |

Did you reboot?

I'm happy to tell you where to find Terminal.
Turns out it's an application which resides in the Utilities Folder within the Applications Folder. Therefore, from the Desktop click on GO in the Menu Bar and drag down to Applications. Then drag down to the Utilities Folder where you will find Terminal.app Yes, paste in the entire script Terry provided, hit Return, Quit Terminal, reboot. I have already saved much time and aggravation having my screenshots saved as JPEGs and not as PNGs! Many thanks to Terry! Again and again and again! Best Wishes, Carol |

ok! I did what you guys said, thank you Terry and Carol. Then, I tried the control/shift/4 and I get this crosshairs icon with numbers and don't know what to do with that. ;(

That's what you see when you invoke the screenshot command. Hold your mouse (or trackpad) down and drag to select your desired
portion of the screen. Then look on the desktop and your screenshot will be there in JPEG format and its name will be Picture "X".jpg where "X" is a number depending upon the number of Picture files already on the desktop. Best Wishes, Carol |

These variations on taking screen shots might be helpful.

Oh, for crying out loud how cool! When I looked at my desktop, I had 6 shots from trying over and over again! The screen should blink or something, because I had no idea that anything was actually happening. Ok, wow, thanks a bunch Carol, I learned a number of things.

You are welcome. And thanks for making me feel
useful on the iBBS. And thanks again to Terry for providing the script to make the screenshots save in JPG format. Best Wishes, Carol |

May I suggest a free widget you might find useful in taking screen shots? Its called ScreenShot Plus and it gives you a number of options including a way to save your screenshots in different formats. I do all my screenshots using it and don't have to remember any key combinations. thanks, Rick

Sounds interesting, Rick. Thanks.
BTW, where can I find ScreenShot Plus? I didn't see it in the Widgets Bar. Thanks again, Carol |

Ok, Rick, thank you for that suggestion. Neat little trick there. I'm wondering what the Terminal does, now that I've found it and used it. It looks like the old DOS instruction. When would Terminal be used? When there isn't a widget? Does Terminal affect only certain parts of software or other things within the computer? Thank you everyone.
