What's the best way to make a hard copy of my Safari Bookmarks?
I've tried exporting them but I only end up with a list of hyperlinks, no visible addresses. I tried to print from "User>Library>Safari>bookmarks.plist" but couldn't get the plist to open or import into a printable application. Suggestions would be appreciated. Denny MeLampy dmelampy@mi.rr.com |

On my 10.6.1 system, I can open Bookmarks.plist with TextEdit.app.
This file can also be opened by other programs like Property List Editor.app, PrefEdit.app, and TextWrangler.app. To get a formatted list of just the name and URL, you can use Bookdog.app and do a screen capture. Or, cut and past into an editor to get just the list of URLs. Since you have not told us the objective of this hard copy, this is the best I can suggest. |

I tried an interesting experiment:
This is tedious if you have lots of folders to categorize your bookmarks, but it works, one folder at a time: 1.Open "Show all Bookmarks" (Bookmarks menu). 2. Select a folder (if necessary - depending on how you structure bookmarks)Expand the window so both your bookmark titles and the http addresses are visible. 3. "Print" (Cmd-P, or from File menu) 4. SAVE AS PDF. 5. Open the PDF. Layout may look a bit peculiar, but both the Titles and Addresses for the selected folder are visible. 6. Hover over the ADDRESSES (not titles) They are active. Click one, and it will take you to the web page. Works in both full Acrobat or Reader (I tried Reader 7). Acrobat may launch a security dialog with a choice to block or allow the page to launch. Just "allow" & you're all set. In the final analysis, Jim's solution is likely more complete & comprehensive, as you don't have to open folders one by one. (But, oh my does that Textedit file look scary!!) I tried this with OS 10.4.11 This message has been edited. P.S.: If you want a text version, you can select Bookmarks & Addresses in the PDF by rows, copy, and paste into TextEdit or a word processor. Everything's there, but not in table form, and the links are not active.

Thanks for the snappy and complete reply folks.
I wouldn't have figured it out without you. Best, Denny |

Though Denny seems to have used one of the solutions provided to him, I was a little intrigued by the issue. So, I tried some of the suggested scenarios.
James - I downloaded a trial of Bookdog, and it worked exactly like you stated. The screen shot would be perfect if anyone just wanted to print a hard copy of the Name and the URL. And, copy/paste into TextEdit worked great for an editable text list of just the URLs. Unfortunately, as you stated, the Names did not appear. Mary Jo - I initially thought that your suggestion would be a flexible solution. However, following your steps did not yield the same results for me. I was unable to save to PDF. The print function was unavailable (grayed out). I'm sure it's related to my using a different OS version, and Safari version. I'm running OSX 10.5.8, and Safari 4.0.3. |

Mike - Onward & downward.
I think some web situations / sites have found ways to disable printing to pdf, though it surprises me that Apple would have disabled it in one of their own apps. There's also the handy-dandy screen shot, but that would require manual entry of long addresses for a text version. This might be a good OS "wishlist" item: Enable printing addresses to a text file.
