Ghosted tracks on iPhone
How do I fix this issue in iTunes (the ghosted tracks)? I've already tried removing all the music from my iPhone & Syncing again, it didn't help.

OS X 10.10.4
iTunes 12.2.1.16
iPhone 6 running iOS 8.4

Have you tried setting it to manage playlists/songs manually?

No difference. Things got all screwy with the latest iTunes/Apple Music. Had to turn off Apple Music just to get it to sync my music! Not into streaming music anyways.

I swear, the more they mess with it, the worse iTunes gets. I wish they'd roll it back to what it was a few years ago.

They really should have 2 apps, iTunes and Apple Music.

I've been seeing the same "ghost tracks" as well. Many of them are duplicates of the "real" tracks. Confusing.

Are the ghosted tracks actually on your phone? I have a bunch of ghosted tracks too, but they are all on the phone.

Also, it turns out that all of my ghosted tracks are of songs that I purchased through iTunes. No ghosts of my self-added content that I've seen.

I had the same problem with the
U2 Apple give-away album "Songs of Innocence",
or something like that.

Even though it was not set to sync from iTunes,
this entire album would not leave my iPhone.

I solved my issue by going to iPhone >
Settings >
General >
Usage >
Manage Storage >
Music >

Those songs were hiding here,
and here is where I deleted them from my iPhone.

Tried deleting all from the iPhone, still have ghosted tracks after a fresh sync. They will not sync to my iPhone, but can be streamed. And yes, they all appear to be ones I purchased. These tracks are on my Mac, I really hate this new player/setup!

ON my iPhone, iOS 8.4.1, I show no "Deactivate iTunes in the Cloud" option available. Under "Library" setting I have "Sort Albums >by..." and "Genius" On/Off switch.

Chuck, I'm guessing that the illustration is for iOS 8.4 not the new update. I have everything disabled on that panel. 'Show Apple Music" and 'iCloud Music Library are the main culprits, I think. This new update is supposed to fix some of the problems. I'm installing it on my current generation iPod touch which has been showing the ghost files. Now, if I can just get iTunes to see the thing when it finishes updating, I'll be all set. Newest version of iTunes couldn't see the touch earlier tonight. That's why I decided to run the update.

Okay — follow up. The ghost tracks were still there, BUT I was finally able to delete them. Clicked on the playlist, the clicked on the 3 dots on the right about the shuffle icon. That brought up a menu that let me delete the entire playlist.

Yeah, still a mess. I want those ghosted tracks to sync. I don't want to have to stream them. I don't have unlimited data, and I'm not always on wifi with my phone. Even after clearing all the music, it still ends up with ghosted tracks of any iTunes purchased music that gets added to my playlist.

This whole mess just gets better. Added a few playlists to my iPod touch last night. In some cases only the name of the playlist made it. The rest of them only had the 1st track. Just did a new sync, made sure the missing tracks were checked, and nada. They won't sync.

Have no idea what is going on, but the missing songs did finally sync. Looking at the playlist through iTunes still showed them as ghosted and not downloaded. Checked the playlist on the iPod itself and the missing tracks were there. Went back to iTunes and now they are showing as synced. Never disconnected, ejected or restarted anything. Come on Apple! Give us back an iTunes that actually works!

Try turning off wifi and see if all your purchased tracks disappear from your playlist on your iPod or iPhone.
