I'd like to move my iTunes library,
AND retain my current playlists, ratings, etc.
So far I've read that I can copy the iTunes folder
by drag/drop to the external drive.
Then, when I launch iTunes, hold down the Option key,
and select the external drive and the iTunes library file
and everything will be as it was on my computer.
Anyone with past experience with this?
Is it that easy?
I DO NOT want to follow the Apple Knowledgebase and
let iTunes copy the files over and have these options selected:
"Keep iTunes Media folder organized"
"Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library"
Worked for me.
Caveat - Starting iTunes with external library drive disconnected means you will have to repeat the Option-Launch of iTunes.
I just copied it to the drive and then told iTunes where it was in the preferences->advanced->iTunes media location.
Never did the option trick, but i don't see why it wouldn't work.
You can never go wrong by doing the right thing.
There are two kinds of computer users: those who have lost data and those who are about to — backup your Mac!
Follow Terry's suggestion to move the iTunes library to an external HD. When you are finished, you can delete the iTunes folder in Users>Music.
You WILL need to remember to always have the external HD connected BEFORE launching iTunes in the future. Otherwise you'll end up creating a new iTunes library that can't find your content.
