Ok..

I must not be that bright, so here's my question.

I want to sync selected podcasts/movies onto my iPhone. Of all the choices there are, I can't seem to find the one that does what I want.

Is there a way to just pick which files you want to have sync? It seems the options provided won't let me do what I want. They make you pick "most recent, least recent, all, blah blah." Some are ghosted out and checked, some are ghosted out and not checked....I just wanna to able to select a checkbox next to the file I want, and be done.

Mad

Thanks

Thom

Hi Thom-
This is how I do it with Itunes 9. Under devices, select your iphone. You should now see tabs: summary, info, applications, etc. Next, select the tab, movies. Check sync movies. Uncheck automatically include. Your list of movies should appear. Just check the ones that you want to sync. You can do this for the podcast tab also. Then, just sync as usual.

Hi Rhonda!

I JUST saw the little checky box about "automatically include," so I turned that OFF.

I then selected 5 video podcasts I wanted sync'd. It sync'd 2 of them. Frown

I should be able to select anything listed, and have it copy over, right? I'm kinda frustrated (and puzzled) about this. It shouldn't matter if you've watched them before, right? Just pick n' go?

Thanks for your help!

Thom--
See if this works for you-
For podcasts: Select your device, iphone.
Click the podcast tab.
Check sync podcasts and check automatically include all episodes of selected podcasts.
Highlight the podcast you want to sync. The episodes should appear on the right.
Check the episodes you are interested in.
Then, sync. I guess that the movie tabs are set up a little differently.

If a video is for some reason not compatible with a particular iPod it will not be copied over.

It very much depends on what you have selected in the Popup menu when you're choosing what to sync. For example, if you have "Sync unwatched episodes" chosen and an episode is marked as not new, then it will not sync.

Movies should be able to be chosen one by one. When it comes to TV shows and Podcasts, it's a little tricker and less flexible. However, the thing I've found is that now in iTunes 9 there is more support for videos in "Playlists". For example you can now stick podcast episodes in a playlist. Then you can choose to sync that playlist to your iPod/iPhone.

So the iTunes 9 way of getting JUST WHAT YOU WANT is to stick what you want in a Playlist and sync it under each category (ie. include Podcast episodes in selected playlists).

Ok....So I turned off the auto sync feature and tried to select a few video podcasts to copy. I got a message (this time) that said some files are not in the right format, and will not be copied. I'm kinda surprised at the author of these podscasts, as many of their other ones work fine.

Side note: my iPhone was acting kinda weird over the last couple weeks. Wouldn't call out, wouldn't go online or do any 'net stuff...without a hard reset. Calls wouldn't show up until later in the day, etc.

I took it to the Apple store and they scratched their heads....and then gave me a NEW phone! Well, the old one like mine, but new. I had about a month left on my warranty! Cool! Now I just have to sync all my junk back over and stuff.

Thanks for the help though, you guys!

Thom

Different question, still applicable:

My new iPhone doesn't seem to sync data to some of my apps. Todo is one app that I had some things planned out (my to do list). That data didn't come over. My progress in Assassin's Creed (gasp!)....didn't come over.

My only options when I got the phone, was to set it up as a "new phone," then sync my junk over. Then I did the update to 3.1 (it came with 3.01).

Don't all apps keep their data in the sync backup? This is kind of a bummer if they don't.

If you didn't restore the phone - if you set it up as a new one - then you just sync the apps as new. You have to restore the phone to get back all your old data. Had you ever synced the iPhone before you exchanged it? Usually the first thing it does is a backup. Then when setting up a phone you usually get an option to start new or restore your old phone. You weren't given a restore option?

I was given a restore option, but it said that I couldn't do it because I had OS 3.1 on my puter and the phone has 3.01. So I had to set it up as a new phone first.

I'm "pretty sure" after I did that, I clicked restore...and then I clicked "update," as the option to update the OS was still there.

Anything I've "lost" is not critical...with the exception of beating some hard levels in Assassin's Creed....LOL.

And since I've synced the phone since having it for a day or so, I'm sure I can't revert to an older sync, right? Frown

Thanks guys, again.

You should still be able to do a restore if it still has your backup.

Wouldn't the restore just restore my "recent" backup? I've sync'd a few times since getting the new phone...

Thanks, Jack.

If you've overwritten it with later backups, yes.

Maybe I can boot from an off-site clone...I think it's about a week old...and then try to sync?

If it hasn't been synced, it might work. It will only cost you time. Make sure you do a current backup on your main system first.

I booted from my clone, which is maybe a week old...so it should have an old backup of my iPhone.

I did the restore, which wipes the phone to original state, then gives you the option to copy from backup.

NOW...once my iPhone is plugged in, it syncs automatically. This option (I think) can only be selected/deselected when the phone is plugged in.

Does my clone now have a NEW sync from the phone that has written over the OLD sync...since the phone syncs when plugged in? OR...can I turn off the "auto-sync when plugged in" option...and reboot from the clone and do this whole thing over again...hoping it restores from the OLD sync on the clone?

I have a funny feeling...that when I plugged in the phone...it sync'd...onto my CLONE drive...and killed the old sync that was there from last week. So I'm basically copying stuff over from from my new phone status, and lost the chance to recover from the old phone status.

Does that make sense? Did I in fact, screw myself?

Thanks...

It appears that my phone's status is that of yesterday, which is to say...my old clone sync was written over.

Sounds like you wiped out your previous backup.

iTunes 9.0.1 may fix some of this for you:
