Has anyone had success using Apple's fax modem? I'm having trouble getting it to work with my MBP and the issue is that is will not send at all and sometimes it won't receive. Phone line is good and I believe the problem might be with the software or the modem itself. It wasn't working with Leopard and I thought it might improve with SL, but no such luck. When I first got the device about 6 months ago it worked fine send and receive but it has since quit about a month ago. Need advice. I don't need the fax modem very often but sometimes it's the only way to get information or receive it.

How are you trying to use it?
Maybe this old Apple article #25746 can offer some help? I usually open a document, select "Print," then choose PDF > FAX PDF. But I'm using old hardware and software - maybe Snow Leopard is different? |

Chuck- Thanks for your response. I do attempt to fax using the method you suggest. When I do I hear the dial tone and the number dial out and then the number I dial never answers. I know it should be answering because it's a place of business and I also tried to send it with them knowing it's being sent. The Message I get is "Device can not be located".

Have you by any chance switched to a voip line like Vonage. I find I have to send faxes with my comouter plugged into my landline.

Donna- Nope don't have Voip at all. I'm going to go over all my hook up with the phone line in my house and then try it again. I will let the group know the results.

1. As the Apple article says, make sure you've selected the proper device for FAX'ing in 'System Preferences.'
2. Try an outgoing FAX line that you know works for other FAX machines. If it works for a FAX machine, it'll probably work for a Mac FAX USB dongle. 3. Make sure you fill-in-the-blanks correctly when filling out the FAX form. YELLOW is for the 10-digit phone. PINK is for long distance dialing prefix which some companies or States require; in other words, '1' in Michigan. |

Here's another Apple forum topic on FAX'ing.

I use my internal modem to fax using the fax pdf choice. I have to put the whole number in the top line. i.e. the "1" precedes the number there. Putting it in the second line, where you would THINK it should go, does not work for me. All eleven digits, the "1" for a long distance number, followed by the area code and phone number, go on the top line and nothing in the second. I don't put any spaces in there. The document I am faxing is, itself, a pdf. I do this every month to get a particular statement that comes to me as a pdf attachment. I also have never been able to figure out how to get a covere page. But just sending the document works.
