What's the best way to re-install Tiger when the state of a machine is unknown, and you're starting with an early Tiger version on disk (e.g., 10.4.0)?
Which method of updating Tiger is advisable? Method 1
Method 2
Thanks. |

Method 1 requires only one Combo Update.
You did omit the step to re-partition the disk to APM, HFS+, Journaled. This is important to a clean build. Do this just before installing the early version of the OS. If you can fathom the Apple pages, download the Combo Update and the Security Updates that follow the Combo Update. Apply them before setting Software Update on its way. iTunes and QuickTime are another story, as are the newer Security updates. Keep them for Software Update after the OS is up to date. iTunes and QuickTime installs usually screw up the permissions, so repair after the updates. Side Note: Use another system to download the updates so that the machine is not on the network until all the Security Updates are applied. . This message has been edited. Last edited by: James R. OK. I'll use HFS+ (probably no need to reformat the hard drive), use 1 partition, turn off FileVault, and delay iTunes & Quicktime installations.
We shall see about using a 2nd machine to temporarily store Security Updates. It may not be possible. It sounds like you prefer to take a slow, incremental approach, and verify things are working before loading the next upgrade. I think I will recommend that this new Mac user obtain a backup drive and backup software immediately. |

Yes, need. Re-partition to guarantee a clean on-disk structure. . |
