I just noticed I am missing some of my contacts. They are on mobileme and they are on the computer with which I sync the Touch. I don't know exactly how many I may be missing as I don't think the Contacts app on the touch gives you a total number. I have 1043 cards in my Address Book app on the computer as well as 1043 entries in mobile me. I only just noticed yesterday that I was missing some. My sister's was not there on the Touch yesterday, although she is on my computer and mobile me right now.

I just told the computer to sync with mobile me. I reset the Touch using the top and front buttons until I saw the Apple.

I have had it in to the genius bar twice recently because it loses the Airport signal. Of course it never does it in the store. They had me restore it to factory settings and sync. I think the missing records were there a few days ago.

Do you think I should do a reset all settings or erase all content and settings from the Touch and then sync it as if new? Or is that too drastic? I just found the count on the Touch. It is the very last thing in the Contacts list. It says I have 583 contacts. Very strange. In iTunes I DO NOT have it set to sync automatically.

I've been learning the iPod Touch "the hard way" lately too, and the only pieces of advice I can think of that might help would be to make sure that if you have the iPod Touch set up to sync Address Book & iCal via MobileMe, then don't set it up to sync these via iTunes as well. I think you said you had already made sure of that. Usually, instead of dropping info, "double-syncing" results in duplicates of all your contact and calendar info!

The other thing to check is to make sure that if you have created special sub-categories or groupings in Address Book and did not select "All Contacts" for syncing, you must also designate which sub-groupings you want to sync.

As far as doing a complete factory settings restore and starting over, I've found that although it worked great for regular iPods that were acting up, but the iPod Touch is a little more complicated. I recently did a Restore through the iTunes panel in order to rid myself of the duplicate calendar and contact entries. Although it worked great and did what I wanted it to, I did not get my Notes back (best to print them out first for safe-keeping, unless you just keep them as part of your Mail inbox), and I had to set up my Mail and Weather accounts and preferences all over again. The iTunes Store did remember all of the apps that I had added to my iPod Touch, though.

Although the Restore option is drastic, for the most part the iTunes software makes it fairly hassle-free -- setting up the email accounts and the weather cities is not a big deal -- and I will say that the Restore did what I needed it to do. The Touch picked up the new sync preferences and now has only one set of iCal and Address Book entries. Because of the large number of missing entries you have, I'd say to go ahead and try the Restore and see if that will let MobileMe sync everything with your Touch.

What's the capacity on your Touch?
