I need to use Pantone colors for Duotone image in Photoshop CS3.
The problem is: When I'm in the "Duotone Options" window and I click on a Ink color swatch I'm not getting the usual Book : (PANTONE® solid coated) list in the "Custom Colors" window. I just get a color spectrum to select from. I want to know how to switch back to the Pantone Books in the "Custom Colors" window. I can't figure how to switch it back after several attempts. I'm using a G5 with OS X 10.5._ Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! ⌘ Science > superstition |

While in the "Duotone Options", click the color swatch. If the next window that pops open is "Select Ink Color" (the typical spectrum), then in that window click the "Color Libraries" button at the right. The "Color Libraries" window will open - select your preferred color library from the "Book" menu.

Chris,
The fact that you inquired about Pantone for duotones, leads me to believe that you are having an image or job printed using a commercial printer. If that's the case, I highly recommend that you talk to the printer to provide what they want for printing. Obviously, this is unsolicited advice, buy I thought I'd mention it. For commercial printing, Duotone images need to be supplied in a specific way and format, to separate correctly. Otherwise you could easily end up with 5 plates or more, instead of 2. Following is a brief example. Let's say I'm going to design a 2 color flyer. I'm using Illustrator (or InDesign, Quark) for the basic design, and am placing a duotone image. In order for the duotone image to separate correctly, it can contain only 2 colors (in your case Pantone). Following is a basic procedure. • While in the Duotone Options, select 2 colors from a Pantone Library. One for the Black, and one for the 2nd color. • Adjust your image with the curves in the Duotone Options. • Save the file - make a Duplicate file to work on further. • Open the Duplicate file, and convert the Color Mode to Multichannel. If you open the Channels palette, you'll notice 2 channels (one for each Pantone Color). • Save this file as a Photoshop DCS 2.0 You can now place the image in Illustrator (or other program). Make sure that the 2 Pantone Colors that you used to create the duotone image are exactly the same as any other colors in the Illustrator file. Again, the best thing to do is confer with your printer. |
