Associate is running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on a Mac Book. Click on the Address Book Icon and nothing happens. Other Icons on dock work fine. Tried starting the Address Book buy going to the Applications folder and clicking on Address Icon there. Still will not run.

Haven't added any apps lately. Perhaps just Software update patches if anything.

Any ideas ????

I'm grabbing at straws. But this is what I would normally do. The alias/icon in the Dock could be corrupt or not linked to the current Address Book application. Delete the icon in the Dock (ya can always make another). If attempting to launch Address Book from the Applications folder, it has to be double-clicked (Sorry - I'm sure that everyone is aware of that, though I just thought I'd mention it, in case it was overlooked). Try trashing the Address Book preferences file (make a backup to be safe, or move it out of its current location temporarily) - run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions - Log Out and Log Back In under a Test User Configuration, in order to test if it works there.

Archive and Install should solve this problem.

That drastic huh Dave. I will relay the message.

If the person has Apple Care, can he stop in and get this fixed if they are not computer savvy?

AppleCare doesn't cover Software related issues. There would be a charge for doing this. An Archive and Install can be done in less than 45 minutes by the customer with their Install disks and instructions from the Genius Bar or Apple's website. Truly a straight forward and easy solution.

When you do an Archive and Install, I assume that you do not have to re-install any programs and you don't have to de-authourize applications. As always you have to backup to perserve data.... correct?

Sometimes you have to re-install if the app put something in the System folders that Apple didn't know it had to preserver. Apple has gotten pretty good about getting everything in the latest releases, but you should be prepared to possibly reinstall some apps. I would also de-auth anything that needs authorization to be safe, because depending on how they do their authorizations you may be hosed after an Archive and Install.

Well it appears that the problem may be otherwise.

After doing an Archive and Install. I still have the same problem. So I thought Hmmmmmm? Could it be the User Profile? So I decided that I would create another User and login as that person and try the Address Book application. ---- HONK! ---- guess what? I cannot get System Prefs to work under the Apple. And there is only one profile on the Mac Book and it's the one with the problem. So here are my choices that I will try next.

1) He has a Time Machine drive and has been making regular backups for the past 3 months. I will reboot with the OSX CD and do a restore from the Time Machine drive and see if it fixes the bad profile.

or

2) I will have to wipe his internal hard drive and recreate it from scratch, create new user profile and a second user profile. Restore his data to his new user profile from the Time Machine drive.
