Hey Gang,
I have an associate that is having a problem with EPS files and jpegs with Mac Mail. Can anyone provide any suggestion or insight. I would think this should be a breeze on a Mac. Also they are sending files to Windows clients. Intel iMac using current version of Mac OS X Questions are posed below. Thanks. 1. Whenever I get an .eps file as an attachment and I select the email, it says 'getting message:..." but then just freezes. I've waited and waited in the hope that it will finally work, but it never does and then the mail crashes. Anyone else have this issue? Any ideas on fixing it? It also happens if I try and attach an eps file to an email. my solution for attaching an eps is to make it a zip file first and that seems to work, but it still means I can't get to any eps files a client will send me. very annoying. 2. When I attach a jpeg file at 72dpi, for a client approval, etc. Alot of them reply saying "I can't see the file, nothing is there" or "your image seems to be embedded into the email body but I can't download an attachement because there is no option to do so" but yet in their reply email the attachement is there, I can drag it right out of their reply. ahhhh so confused. I have not really been able to find anything online which gives me any help to fix this issue. .eps should be .eps, but did they check the "Send as Windows friendly attachment" check box before sending???

In the past I have had trouble sending files to Windows users using AOL mail.
I'm never "lost" cause I always know where "I" am. I just may not know where anything else is or how to get there. |

#1 - has this happened with many different .eps files or the same one multiple times?
#2 is a function of their mail client. What are the recipients using? === Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “Nothing is impossible. Not if you can imagine it. That’s what being a scientist is all about.” Cubert J. Farnsworth: “No, that’s what being a magical elf is all about.” |

I would think "files is files" regardless of whether EPS, JPEG, TEXT, MP3 whatever.
How large are the EPS files being emailed? It almost sounds like what happens when a file is too large for either the sender's or recipient's ISP mail system to pass. Many have 10 or 20MB limits on mail message sizes. Is he dragging pictures/files into the message or (preferably, so I've heard) using the "attach" command or Icon? While this shouldn't make a difference, it's worth a try. As Jack mentions make sure the "Send as Windows-friendly" box is checked or set as a preference. Also, I've heard of people having issues when they let an attachment be placed in mid-message. Try making it the final item on the page after message text. |

Also, if he is sending to an AOL account, I used to have problems if I sent more than one attachment.

Nope. It depends what MIME type they get attached as, and if any characters are mis-interpreted as control characters. A file too large would not crash the recipient's mailbox when trying to pull the file as it would have already been rejected. And it was Dave who mentioned the "Windows-friendly" attachments (although I would have, but credit where credit is due). === Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “Nothing is impossible. It seems now that we are experiencing the same problem. If our art dept sends an email with an attached JPG file from Mac Mail to our Sales dept, the files shows up in the body of the email rather than as an attachment. And yes - they are selecting "Send Windows Friendly Attachments." Has anyone found anymore information about this problem? Our Sales dept is using OutLook 2003. If the sales reps then try to rick-click to save the file, it does save it, but as a BMP file only, and not as a JPG. I remember once for some recipients I had to make sure I did not have the cursor set in the body of the email before attaching a file. I clicked and hit return at the end of the body text so the attachment's icon was the final item on the page.
Maybe worth a try. |

Another thing to try (if Corporate Firewall Rules do not prevent it):
Compress the proposed attachment and send the resulting .zip file. The recipient will have to double click the attachment to expand it. Almost every OS now current support zip archives. |
