Since upgrading to SL on the MBP I have been getting a flicker or maybe it would be called a flash on the screen about every 5 minutes. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this. I don't see how moving to SL would cause this but it seems to be getting worse the longer I have the computer turned on. No particular function or application triggers the flash/flicker. I thought it was due to my DSL line so I turned it off. Tried running on battery only and same results. Rebooted and also updated to 10.6.1 no change. I think I'll be visiting my friendly Apple store unless someone has a better solution.

Do you have one of the newer MBPs with two video cards? If so, switch to the high-end card if you are on the low end or visa versa and see if you still get the flicker. If if goes away, you likely have a problem that Terry mentioned after the meeting last night, and you will probably need your system serviced by Apple.

Mr. B. Here's the video cards I have shown in the system profiler. How do I switch between them?

You actually do it in the Energy Saver Settings:
This is a known issue and I was having it before 10.6. To have it fixed does require a logic board swap. However, in the meantime switching to higher performance should stop the flickers. ---- You can never go wrong by doing the right thing. 4 out of 3 people have trouble with fractions. Thanks Terry- I switched to Higher Performance per your guidance and will let you know what happens.

You need to log out and log back in after making that change for it to take effect.

Thanks Mr. B. It turns out you have a choice when you make that change in the System Preferences, it offers you that choice and so I did so. So far no more flickering. Some time this week I'll make a clone of the MBP and then it's "Off To See The Wizard" at the Novi store. This one simple tip and many more like it are typical of all the help the MacGroup provides for it's members. Plus there are probably many non-members who benefit just by observing and following this BB.

Good to know it warns you - I don't have one and so have not seen the process in action.
