Apple has a KnowledgeBase article describing everything that Safe Boot does.

Even though that article doesn't say anything about the virtual memory swap files, I suspect they get deleted during a safe boot.

Does anyone know if that's correct?

This is for a Mac running 10.4.11.

I'll answer with my own question, "Why would a Safe Boot not delete old swap files?"

I have been taught that Safe Boot omits items which are not necessary for running a minimal system. Swap file management would seem to be a required item. (These are dynamically created as required by Mac OS X.)

Since swap files are recreated after *any* boot - they have to be, since they are used by the OS to manage memory - a Safe Boot would pretty much have to recreate these files.

That makes sense. But then, why do some Mac maintenance apps—most notably AppleJack AppleJack—have a feature to delete them?
