Is there a reason why Toast can not read the DVD+R discs? I tried to make a copy and it would not recognize it? I have Toast 6.0.3.
Thanks! Natalie |

Is it a commercially-made, copy protected disk?
Can you read the disk OK in the Finder? What kind of disk is it - video, data? === Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “Nothing is impossible. Not if you can imagine it. That’s what being a scientist is all about.” Cubert J. Farnsworth: “No, that’s what being a magical elf is all about.” |

Hi Jack,
It is a in-house produced video of a work related event-(not copy-protected). I can view it ok in the dvd player, for some reason Toast will not recognize it. |

When you go to the Toast menu Recorder and click on Disc Info, does it correctly identify the disk?
Do you have more than one CD/DVD drive? If so, have you tried the disk in each? You didn't mention what version of OS X you're running, it might be important. === Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “Nothing is impossible. Not if you can imagine it. Without being there, this is pretty tough to diagnose.
I recommend you use Disk Utility to make a disk image of the DVD and then burn the image, either with OS X or Toast. === Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “Nothing is impossible. I am having the same problem except I am trying to burn copies of "Family Reunion" on DVD-R.
Orginally I copied VHS to DVD. The DVD plays on my DVD player. Now I want to burn copies for family through Toast 6.0 and my iMAC G5 will not burn copies although my MAC will play the movie. Does this mean I have to make copies DVD to DVD which would be time intensive? Do I need a newer copy of Toast for success? I am trying to burn to DVD-R 16x. |

What error do you get? Can you make a disk image in Disk Utility and burn that?

To Artphanto:
You might have a Toast problem. Can you try detecting the disk with Toast 7 or 8 somewhere? You may also want to try updating Toast to version 6.1.1. DVD+R disks are the least compatible of all DVD disks (DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R, and finally DVD-RAM). I listed those in decreasingly order of compatibility. You cannot produce DVD-ROM disks at home - those are molded in factories. It sounds like somebody at work made a fatal mistake producing stuff on DVD+R disks. To Elaine: Who performed your video conversion? You say the DVD-R does play on an external DVD player like you'd buy at WalMart? I have not copied movies disk-to-disk myself, in the way you suggest with Toast 6, but I have burned data disks that way. I have also burned movies direct to DVD-R from my hard drive. Toast 6.x.x works well using that method. If a movie file plays on your iMac in the application called "DVD Player," you should be able to burn it to a DVD-R from your hard drive. Many combinations of software, hardware, and firmware do not produce playable DVD's. You have to find the right combination. I have actually found a DVD burner that produces exceptionally high quality burns, yet it cannot play its own disks!
If Toast doesn't burn the movie, try using Apple's iLife applications. |

Hello Chuck,
I only have Toast 6.0 and cannot figure out how to update to Toast 6.1.1 Would it help if I update to Toast 8.0? Yes, I burned DVD-R 16x Burn speed Best or tried to burn. Video conversion was not on a computer but a Sony Video to DVD recorder which I finalized so it would play on any DVD player (hooked to a TV) or on a computer. My error message says, "VTS_01_1.VOB" is an unknown format and cannot be imported. Should I buy Toast 8.0 or iLIFE or just continue to copy DVD to DVD which is time intensive? |

When burning a Video DVD in Toast, you are supposed to point at the VIDEO_TS directory. It sounds like you pointed at the files inside.
To get the updates, you need to go to the Roxio site. You'll need your serial number. === Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “Nothing is impossible. Not if you can imagine it. That’s what being a scientist is all about.” Cubert J. Farnsworth: “No, that’s what being a magical elf is all about.” |

I don't think you absolutely need to spend money to upgrade to Toast 8. There have only been small improvements between version 6 & 8.
Jack is correct: you must burn not only the files, but the entire folder containing the video files. It's quite easy, once you figure it out. Drag and drop. To upgrade from Toast 6.0.3 to 6.1.1:
If my very weak memory serves me correctly, Roxio doesn't have self installing upgrades. You must manually drag the new application into the old Toast folder. So, drag both of the folders shown below into the Toast window when making DVD's. Or, if they're contained in another folder, just drag that single folder into Toast. ![]() |

You don't need the AUDIO_TS directory unless you actually have files in it (I have yet to see this). You do need VIDEO_TS.

Artphanto-
Does your drive [i]play[i/] DVD+R discs? That could be the reason it's not being recognized. - One Nation Under A Groove - |

Yes, true. Even if drive doesn't play DVD+R disks, there may be a firmware upgrade to enable that capability.
Artphanto: What kind of drive or computer do you have? If you haven't upgraded the firmware in an older computer DVD drive, it may be time to do that. You may need to buy a new internal or external drive if you want to play DVD-ROM, DVD-R, and DVD+R disks, and their counterparts in the CD world. And all the rewriteable versions of all the disks just mentioned. |
