Mac Observer published this Firewire artice today.

It sounds like (from other articles plus this one) Sony, TI, and Apple are going to try to "ram through" a one-sided specification that will challenge eSATA and HDMI with a throughput of 3.2Gbps. HDMI 1.3 transfers data at 10.2 Gbps, so Firewire S300 will have to evolve to something even faster to work with "deep color" Blu-ray DVD's. I think we could see something by late summer in Apple computers and Sony hardware.

This is all good.

HDMI and USB 1.0 were stillborn - full of errors and lack of foresight. It's a good thing Firewire is not run by a ineffective committee of factional commercial interests like the DVD forums, USB, or HDMI. The Windows PC camp doesn't like Firewire, so it is good they're not "participating," as that would involve too much cooperation among factional parties. With any luck, S300 will offer mechanically locking connectors.

The article on this in "Information Week" says
The technology will be able to use existing FireWire 800 cables and connectors while delivering a major boost in performance.

A more secure, and reverse-direction-plugin-proof connector would certainly be a Good Thing.

Can any Mac computer (particularly MacBooks with DVI connectors) play hi-def signals into HDTV's?
