Detroit SMPTE (Soc. of Motion Picture and Television Engineers)
February 19 (tonight, sorry for late notice). 7:30pm at Detroit Institute of Arts Film Theatre Larry Baranski, Associate Curator for the DIA Auditorium and Film Theatre, will present a program on the architecture and acoustic design of this historic 1927 performance space, designed specifically for exhibiting motion pictures. A screening of this year's "Academy Award-Nominated Shorts" will follow. For more info visit SMPTE.org/sections and click "Detroit" link. |

What happened at the meeting Chuck? Who can I contact to learn more about acoustic design in detail?
I would have liked to attend. I always seem to have conflicts when someone discusses acoustic design. Thanks. |

The meeting covered the history of the DIA film theatre auditorium. The acoustic design aspects were touched on but not covered in great detail. Interesting note that that the theatre's design was adjusted from original plan to be "wrapped around" the pipe organ's plenums and sound dumps to allow for best dispersion of its sound. Other discussion on audio at the meeting concerned the custom-designed DLC (David Clark) "Voice of the Institute" theatrical audio speaker systems.
Re acoustic design info, possibly someone at the Detroit Chapter of the Audio Engineering Society might offer some pointers. A quick Google search came up with the Acoustical Society of America |

Thanks Chuck. I'll look into your recommendations.
I'm interested in "seat-of-the-pants" acoustic room design, as well as computerized acoustic design. |
