Does anyone use these Newertech Ministack drives? Experience? I think they're designed to go with Mac Mini computers.

Mary Jo,

My Macmini3,1 sits on top of a Ministack V2 on top of two Ministack v3s. I have installed 4 Ministack V3s connected to a Dual-2.0GHz G5. I travel with one or two Ministacks and a MacBook Pro. I have installed Ministacks for several client systems.

Of the dozen or two I have procured or caused to be procured, there have been no problems.

Given all that, I personally add four vinyl stick-on feed to the bottom of Ministack enclosures and Mac Minis to increase the airflow space. The resulting temperature reduction helps increase reliability. And, I always put the Mini at the top of a stack, both for cooling and for wireless signal access.

Jim - Do the extra USB ports on the Ministack behave like a hub, so that the Mini connects to devices from EITHER/BOTH the computer & the Stack?

(I've got too many printers! May replace the AIO with a dedicated up-to-date scanner. - Would still need LOTS of ports.)

Donna,

Connecting a USB cable to the USB2.0 port enables the Ministack V2 to act as a USB Hub with three downstream connectors. For faster disk access, also connect the FireWire port to your computer and move the selector switch to 1394a instead of AUTO. I don't recommend using more than one downstream FireWire port, but that is another story.

The Ministack V3 has only one usable USB port, which still can be handy if you are connecting the disk drive using USB. I normally connect V3s using FireWire or eSATA and ignore the USB connections.
