A really good long-time friend of mine has finally decided that it is time for her Performa (!!!) to be sent to computer heaven. It hasn't worked for a while anyway. She has Comcast phone and TV package, so could add internet very easily. Does anyone have a computer lying around, doesn't have to be fancy or even have wireless, just something suitable for email and browsing, hopefully running 10.4 or capable thereof and capable of running a current browser? I will be at the meeting this Sunday.

Donna,

I might have an iMac G3 for you. It is running Tiger, I think. My 85 y/o aunt is running the same thing and loves it.

I'll check it out in the next couple of days. Payment in the form of a thank you from a sweet 89 year old should be just about right.

Let me know if that would work.

Jamie

Sounds good! She also will probably need a printer. The one she has is an original Stylewriter and I think it only has an ADB connector, although I did not look at the connector when I was there. Anyone out there who can help?

I hope this is not a repost. I am unclear if you edit a message after the fact if it goes out again as a new message, because I never get emails about messages I post. I assume that is normal behavior for the iBBs.

Jamie: I have original install disks for an iMac G3 SE 500Mhz, which is what I used to have. The video part went on that one. Can you get at the computer and click on the Apple menu: About This Mac and let me know what it says there? Click also on Hardware and see if it reads DVDs.I expect none of the G3s wrote DVDs, but it is good if it can read them. Is it a tray loader or a slot loader. So then, I can compare it to the specs on the one that may be available here in Ann Arbor, which is supposed to "have all the parts" and work. I have located a printer available nearby.

Donna,

It's a 400 MHz G3 and 128 RAM running OS 9.1. I might have a stick of RAM somewhere. However, I can quickly clean up my mother's iMac 400Mhz with 576 RAM; slot loading CD and does have OSX 10.4. She hasn't used it in two years or more.

Thanks to Jamie, I now have a computer for this nice lady which I am getting up to current 10.4.11 with all software updates. this is a G3 400 MHz 576 RAM and can take up to 1GB RAM. I'd like to replace the 64MB with a 512. Does anyone have a spare PC100 SDRAM 512MB they'd like to contribute? I think a PC133 would be OK too.

At one point I gave my broken G3 to someone who took the drive out for me and put it in a case to go under my Mac mini. It had two 512's in it. Jim Cutler I think. I hope someone has a 512 sitting around they don't need. Please.

I have a printer for her also, courtesy of another friend. So pretty soon I'll be able to get her all set up with the new rig.

Donna, I will have some 133s, I think a 256 & a 512 available very soon.
I'll send a PM as soon as I know for sure.

That sounds perfect, Bill. I can use the 512 in this computer and the 256 in another that I am preparing for someone else.

I have her computer set up and working via Comcast. Someone gave her a new-in-box all-in-one HP inkjet (it was the freebie along with a iBook and not needed.) We haven't hooked it up yet. It's less than 2 years old and came with a CD with various software. I seem to recall that it is NOT a good idea to install HP software for the printer and to rather use the driver with the system. She's running 10.4.11 with all current updates. Obviously, I would download the latest driver from HP, if it is really necessary. Any suggestions? Unfortunately, I do not have the model number on hand as I am not over there. It's a printer/scanner, not a fax. It reads SD etc. cards. Do we need the software?

If it's an all in one, you'll probably need their software for some functions (like scanning). The included drivers generally only handle printing.

Try installing the printer and see if you can use Image Capture to scan. if not, you'll need the HP software.

Also try the card reader. Again, if it doesn't work, you'll need HPs drivers.
