A close friend who was a fine baritone made some 78rpm recordings many years ago. He passed last spring and his widow has asked me to try to convert his recordings to CDs. I have the software to cleanup the noise but I do not have a working turntable which will play 78s. If anyone has such a player and would be willing to loan it to me for a week, I and the widow would very grateful.

I have a usb turntable which is designed to do just this. You could borrow it. I am in Ann Arbor though. |

Thanks, Cal, but the Ion products all have only two speeds, and you load a 78 at 45 then software makes the appropriate conversion. I've used one and found the accompanying Audacity software cumbersome. And because this project is relatively small, I'd prefer not to make that large of an investment.

According to the data on that more expensive Ion, it DOES handle 78's directly. The less expensive one, which I have, handles 33 1/3 and 45's directly and does 78's via software. From what I can tell it reads them in at 45 and converts.

Hi All,
Phyllis, I just found your emails in my junk file - gotta make some adjustments there. I'll call you tomorrow morning . Donna, My favorite sound editing software is Sound Soap which works well with Mac OS10.4+. I'd prefer not to have to make that conversion, so I'll first try to use the old 78 player Phyllis has offered. |
