I have a 400mhz G4 that my kids use and it only has a 20GG HD (my ipod is bigger). Does anyone have a Larger ATA HD that would be compatible with my older G4 Mac?

Why not just hook an external firewire drive if more space is what you need. Just how much bigger of a hard drive are you looking for?

Also keep in mind you will be limited to a maximum of 120GB with an internal drive in that G4.

Scott,

I'll look around and see what I can find for you. Since you can add up to 3 more drives to the tower maybe we go that route.

Just my 2 cents, based on some recent decisions to make with my computers. And, I have some newer ones, and older ones.

I am tending to lean more and more to external drives. Granted that internal hard drives are comparatively a little less expensive - but, you have to either install them yourself, or pay for installation. With externals, you can generally just plug them in, and the computer will automatically recognize them.

If your computer has a limitation of how large a drive you can install, there isn't any limitation for an external (though I'm not positive).

From my viewpoint, the beauty and value of external drives is this. They are now relatively inexpensive. A LaCie 500GB is about $160 or less, depending on connectivity options (USB, FireWire 400, FireWire 800, etc.). Less connectivity options, lower price. And, you can then plug it into any computer. Your old G4 isn't going to last forever. The external will probably outlast it. You could also partition a large external, to use for Time Machine. Again, plug it in to a new computer and Restore from Time Machine.

In my opinion, the same holds true for external CD/DVD drives/burners, or SuperDrives - especially for laptops. The SuperDrive in my PowerBook died. I picked up a new LaCie CD/DVD drive for around $120 including shipping. It will read and burn CD, DVD, and dual sided DVD. I can plug it into any Mac or computer.

It's all about flexibility. Just my 2 cents.

Since Scott is only using this for his kids to play on, I think he is hoping to find a slightly larger drive on the very cheap Wink

External drives make more sense in the long run but if we can salvage/re-use a few old drives for data that doesn't matter (ie: games and stuff), I believe this is what he is trying to accomplish.
